Competition. 30 million resumes are in circulation and the number of candidates far exceeds the number of available jobs.

Northop-Grumman's technology division receives 720,000 resumes a year... but they only hire 3600 people... or 1 out of every 200.

Industry leaders like IBM, Intel and Microsoft get more than 1,000 resumes for every opening. And, some search firms say they receive over 12,000 resumes from executives each month.

25 million people compete each year for 3.8 million $100,000+ jobs. That's more than a 6 to 1 ratio operating against you.

Regardless of your talent, if your resume fails to portray you as superior in the first 20 seconds... the reality is you will be running your search with a major competitive disadvantage.

After applying a microscope to hundreds of thousands of resumes, we have an extremely good handle on what works... and what does not.

Historical resumes. Many people still believe that they should use a historical resume... documenting their experience from their most recent position to jobs held a long time ago. Unfortunately, in today's market, at Executive Resumes International we've learned this rarely works anymore. And, for changing industries, it almost never works.

What works best today?
We'll answer that on the menu buttons that follow.

Unfortunately, when you look for a job, you're reduced to how you look on paper. And, 95% of all resumes are average in appearance, disclose too many liabilities and don't sell skill sets.

Since the 1990s, the growth of PCs, fax machines, the Internet and email has resulted in firms receiving 50 times more resumes.

Resume scanning. Employers have also embraced resume-scanning software and shifted to new ways of selection. This has made recruiting a database driven process.

Now, Executive Resumes International, as a result of thousands of searches, has developed a more effective approach-one which utilizes several types of resumes.

How does having several types of resumes
give you a competitive advantage?

The answer is that each one is targeted for use in different applications. Of course, the style, tone and every word must be crafted to capture the best expression of what you have to offer.

"A" resumes. When you have an "A" resume, it's likely to be 100 times more effective than a "B" or "C" resume! But even an "A" resume must consider the particular application for which it will be used.

Resumes for generating initial interest...
getting people to call or email you.

(1) Universal resumes

Your main resume. A universal resume... a one-page document is an introductory resume. You always get more calls when your initial resume is interesting, but short!

Scanning ready. This resume must be suitable for key word scanning and headlined with the job title you seek, and contain a 20 second summary.

When we write a universal (initial) resume,
we have 7 rules we never violate.

  • We use a one-page resume.
  • We start with the jobs you want.
  • We make sure your resume is scanning ready.
  • We provide a 20-second summary.
  • We minimize your liabilities.
  • We sell your transferable skills.
  • We project a 1st-class image... for you

(2) Electronic resumes

Your internet resume. This is the 2nd resume we do for all clients. To get the best results, this must be two-thirds of a page. Remember, all you want is a response. Once an employer is interested, you can supply a universal resume or a biography.

(3) Quick-response resumes

The 3rd resume makes it very easy for you to respond quickly to situations. It positions the text so you can include a handwritten note and skip a cover letter. This allows you to get a lot of resumes into circulation and to quickly generate more interviews.

Leave-behind resumes... for personal
connections and special situations

Interview resume

An interview resume is a persuasive 2 to 3 page document which reveals more about you... once employers are interested. Then, it can be extremely compelling and help you close the deal.

Executive biography

A biography is a 3 to 5 page narrative written in a third person style. It uses interesting stories, rich in detail, and is favored by top recruiters.

This works extremely well for a number of reasons.

First, it is understated. You never seem too available.

Second, it is personal and dignified... almost an article.

Third, it is easier to avoid disclosure of your liabilities.

Finally, it is a "solution resume."

If you had a 2nd objective, such as COO instead of a VP sales, then it is easy to shift it into a 2nd compelling document.

Your resume impacts your income

Your resume telegraphs at a glance... an image of you being worth what you require... or not. Our materials create an image of distinction, helping in final negotiations.

How many people have biographies? And, how many resumes project commanding distinction? The answer is probably only a few.

Biographies can be essential for those competing for C-level jobs. Anyone seeking $200,000 or more should have this document... as well as others who earn slightly less. When you have one of our "bios," your whole career looks more impressive. And, when you come across much better... you do much better. It's just that simple.

All of our resumes are custom solution resumes.

People need a resume that solves their particular situation and presells them... and that's what we supply.

Highly marketable achievers need a resume that will immediately set them apart, memorably and convincingly.

Anyone who is unemployed needs a resume that puts achievements ahead of dates... shows momentum... and why they are the solution for an employer.

Those whose achievements are less than stellar... need to show their ability to contribute in specific ways, while emphasizing personal strengths and transferable skills.

Those whose employers have not fared well... despite their individual contributions... need to separate their value from the fortunes of their employer.

Those with a checkered career, or too many jobs, need to minimize liabilities... while emphasizing "selected positives" and avoiding being put on the defensive.
